Hi Ferret,
Tuneboy is very useful - it enables you to adjust the standard ignition, fuel and air/fuel ratio (AFR) targets used by the ECU. I have used mine to load the modified 6034 Tornado map, which suits a more open exhaust, and also to modify some ecu settings like the temps at which the fans kick in. I could spend more money by taking my bike to a Tuneboy-proficient Dyno centre and getting a few hours fine-tuning done to suit my specific bike / exhaust etc.
The benefit of the Motty AFR Tuner (or the PCV + Autotune module) is that these products dynamically adjust your ignition control systems in real time, based on a target air/fuel ratio at different points in the rev range. To quote from the Motty site "
For example a rich mixture for best power in the high load areas, a leaner mixture for good fuel economy in cruising conditions and a richer mixture for good throttle response in the low throttle regions. ...and it continuously maintains this even if new modifications are made to the motorcycle or slow changes like air filter clogging or engine wear take place"
It does this by using information from a lambda sensor placed in the exhaust to determine the actual combustion performance of your engine and adjust the control systems
in real time. If I put the standard exhaust back on my Tornado the Motty would adjust the ignition parameters accordingly to make the engine breath / burn according to my specified targets.
Tuneboy will give you a good starting point based on yours (or someone else's) time and money spent on a Dyno, but a Motty AFR Tuner will continually adjust your bike as you ride it to run as efficiently as possible (or as rich as possible - if that's what you want!!).
The Benelli triple has a reputation for running rich and using way too much fuel. Running rich can cause long-term problems like carbon build-up on the valves/ports which itself leads to poor combustion and other secondary problems. And poor fuel economy is just plain expensive, and inconvenient when filling stations are scarce.
My main interest is preventative - I'd rather spend money making sure my Nelli is running as optimally as possible than have to shell out big on repair bills. The side-effect of better fuel economy (see Errol's info) is just an added bonus, but a very welcome one!
I want one!
cheers,
Dom
