    Sprag clutch cover removal multies

    Hi,
Has anyone ever tried to fix the sprag clutch on the multies? I'm building a 654 engine and am a little bored with the usual screetching when I try to turn a 600 or 900 Benelli over. I need to remove the cover No8 in the picture. It seems to be crimped on it's such a tight fit . I've tried tapping it with a hammer and drift but fear I'm going to mess it up.

The story seems to be that you can get some improvement by making the oil and dirt drain from the clutch by adding a couple of holes to the cover. I was going to try to put these where the red dots are. I could make these holes without taking the cover off but it would be nice to be sure that any burrs / swarf was removed afterwards.

The next improvement is to take the old sprag down to a bearing supplier and get the modern equivalent that comes with more sprags (the wiggly bits).

Does anyone know anything about this or have you done something better?

    Ta

    Chris

Ok, I'm going to try to make a split puller that will locate over the cover with a .8mm lip to pull on the cover's edge. The cover is only soft steel and I'm worried that it will ruck up like a carpet rather than come off nicely. With the puller shaped to fit snugly over the cover but not squeezing it any rucking should be prevented. The button shape in the center is needed to give my two legged puller something to push against as the sprag clutch has a hole in the middle.
