    Tires - Inches aren't metric! duh

    I need to get a set of tires for my 650 Tornado. Stock is 3.50-18 Front, 4.25-18 rear.

    I mounted up a 100/90-18, and it hit the front fender sides. Using the vernier caliper, the width was 3.86". dammit.....
    On the back I was going to put a 110/90-18 Bridgestone S11, but THAT one measures 4.5" wide, again, too wide.

    On another bike I have a Bridgestone Battlax 110/90-18. THAT measures 4.25 inches wide. I guess its a different crown shape. This will work.

    I called a dealer who had a 90/90-18 in stock, that measured 3.5" wide, so that should fit the front.

    Anyway: what do you guys do? ask for "inch" measured tires? or convert to metric? if so, what sizes did you buy, if you have Tornado?? thanks

    Just checked mate and your tyre sizes are all wrong. You should fit front 120/70X17 Rear 190/50X17 just got these sizes off Motorcycle News website

    Hi,
    I fitted a retro looking Bridgestone Exedra which is OEM fitment on the new Triumph Bonnies. It was a special order but works and looks a treat. I'll check the exact sizes tonight. Mine is a MK1 with I think a WM2 front and WM3 rear wheel rim. The rear tyre is a std BT45. Yup I know I've mixed a radial and a cross ply but the guy from Bridgestone said it was cool.

    Terry that would be fine if we we talking about a modern Tornado. FBMs bike is a 650 from the 70s ( and rather a sexy looking bike to may I add)

    I have found this page useful in trying to work out what modern tyre size are comparable with the old inch sizing systemhttp://www.cb450stuff.com/tires/

    I also looked up on Avon's website and they recon 90/90-18 for the front and 110/90-18 which sounds about right as your rear wheel size is the same as on my old Guzzi

    Chris, the BT45 is a dual compound cross ply tyre, definitely not radial. So I assume the Excedra is a radial. I had never heard of the Excedra, but judging from the tread pattern, I'd personally stick with BT45's on Classics. With regards, to BT45's, their tyre pressures should be some 5psi higher than the OEM e.g. Pirelli.
    I wouldn't mix them... Ref the Bridgstone guy, get their claim in writing

    Very curious to hear what sizes you have?

    Appologies I never got around to looking last night as I was too excited by the early 350 GTS four I've just acquired. Without being too flippant I'm confident that the Exedra is better than the 40 year old ribbed Pirelli Supersport that was on the bike last time you saw it in blue Bob! Not to worry I've kept the old tyre just in case... .

    Seriously though the Tornado is a bugger to find tires for because of that narrow front guard. Modern profile tires are often too wide. The GTS is even worse but it's only a small bike really.

    Actually, the name is Exedra and I believe they made both radials and crossply's under this tyre name.

    I've got a matched set of BT45s on my 500/4 Benelli; 100/90-18 and 110/90-18. That's where I got the measurements of 3.84" front, 4.23" rear from ACTUAL measurements.

    I decided that for the Tornado; 110/90-18 will be close enough to 4.25-18 stocker, and 90/90-18 (3.5") will be almost dead on with of the 3.50-18 stocker. Height may be slightly different.

    I found I need to change the rear sprocket too. the rear is pretty hooked, and 36T. I have an alloy spare one for my 500/4 (35T), so that will go on.
    Front sprocket looks perfect, on the rear is hooked. I'm keeping the front, swapping the rear and getting a new chain.

    Ok my tyre sizes on the MK1 (steel rims and deeper front guard than the S) read in the gloom last night are:

    Front: Bridgestone Exedra L303 3.50 S 18
    Rear: Bridgestone Battleaxe BT45 110/90 18

    It took a long time to find the exedra as that front mudguard is so tight on modern rubber - there is a clearance of only 2-3 millimeters but it looks great.

    I accept any criticism of my tire choice here. My reasons for choosing these tires is that they're always going to be better than the original Pirelli Supersports, they fit and I don't want to chuck the front guard and the front looks period. The Tornado is not a performance bike and I'm not a fast rider.
