Trying to get the 650 to idle smooth. :(

The 650 is looking mighty handsome these days. Unforturnately, it looks better than it starts.

The main complaint, the hard starting. The idle is just "ok". revs are great, running at speed is very good too.

So: I synched the carbs with sticks, no help. The latest: removed the carbs and cleaned them inside and out. I'm going to reinstall and synch them once again. Valve lash checked, all is fine. Checked the points tonight, Ah HAH! the bottom point set is covered with grease! (left cyl.). I don't know where it came from, but this, hopefully, is the culprit.

I'll get it all back together by this weekend. We'll see how it goes.

Have you tried using an ultrasonic cleaner on the carb bodies? The tiny transition passages tend to block wrecking the idle. Needles and Needle jets also wear oval qite fast on the VHBs especialy on bikes which vibrate. You're quite right in that 90% of carb problems are ignition related :-)

It may be worth buying the carb service kits too, if not already done so, while you have them apart. It's little money for new seals, etc for peace of mind.

ah....clean the carbs, adjust the slides, adjust the enrichener cables, adjust slide cables, clean the points, change the plugs and Bob's your uncle ! ! !

Success! ! !. Damn thing scared me! started on the first kick

Nice addition was to drill and tap ports for carb sticks into the intake manifolds. With the ports plugged with slotted 5mm screw, it looks perfectly stock. Heck, my 500/4 has them stock, why not the 650.
