    Scary steering play

    Hi,
after the first "long" road test in my rebuilded 750 SEI, -about 50 Km. - I have noticed that the work is not still finished.
The most noticiable problem is a scary longitudinal steering play when the bike runs at some speed.
So I have decided to replace the steering bearings.
Anybody knows if are there conical bearings to fit in the SEI steering?.
Also will thank any recommendation about the procedure and spare parts, being that is the first time I will do this.
    Cheers!.

As far as i know the Benelli 750 sei had taper roller bearings as standard, they are avilable from most classic Benelli spares stockists

    Sei Headlamp

The Sei came with old type bearing races with 4 mm steel ball bearings.
I have tried to assemble the steering head 3 times now with limited success. The lower triple tree bearing race I covered in sticky bearing grease the fitted the 36 ball bearings. This offers up into the steering head and is OK. The top 36 bearings I again fitted the the upper steering head race but when I screw the upper race nut down on the lower triple tree thread it dislodges the ball bearings before i can nip it up..... I would love to fit a tapered bearing set up but there doesn't seem to be one out there.

Found this in Ebay. Could be a nice option instead of the original ball bearings but seems to be ended and is expensive...

Hmmmm.....very interesting. I have an idea to make a tapered roller set that would be better than this. In the planning stage and it won't be as extortianate as that hopefully.

Nice, let me know, Orlando. The original system is considered a weak point, in fact the 900 model was equipped with conical bearings. Is a good point to improve.

Yes will do. Thinking of making a holder for the tapered bearing set up out of stainless along the lines of the original set up of bearing holders that fit into the steering head. Except they don't have races for the bearings, just a step inside so the tapered roller bearing races would just press in. Just have to get the dimensions right so the upper and lower triple trees are in the original positions.

Great!. This would improve a lot the steering. I will try to dismantle mine to check sizes, too (actually I can not unlock the central axle washer ).
    Let me know, good luck!.

I went through this on my 254. I reused the bearing cups after polishing off on a lathe what was left of the chrome on the bearing race surface. 4mm or 3/16" balls are available cheap at any bearing supply. The most important step is to square up the ends of the steering head tube before putting the cups back in. When the steering head is welded to frame tubes it causes distorsion. Because all the tubes are welded to the rear of the head tube it makes the head tube bow and shrink in length on the rear side. On my 254 it was more than .5mm out. I turned a shaft to slip inside the head tube and filed the ends square to the end of the shaft.

Bicycle racers have a tool for this to get head and crank bearings parallel for max efficiency.
