Resurrecting a 500 LS in boxes...

    Good morning all.

Not sure if I have done something awesome... or something foolish So many projects start that way right? Anyway... today I acquired a Benelli 500 LS that is mostly complete. My plan is to resurrect it and have a bit of fun with it.

I have built a few Italians in my past but this one is the first real BIG project. Should be mind numbingly awesome and frustrating!

I have not inspected it yet but head up to pick it up this weekend. I will likely have a few questions for the experts as I go along.

    Cheers!

Fascinating, and mysterious. At first sight, it looked like the engine was complete and you were getting a heap of spare engine internals. Then, on looking again, you can see that the engine has been gutted and then placed back in the frame. Very odd, but I guess it makes for a convenient way to store the empty engine.
I hope you don't have to replace too much of that engine, but you have to wonder why it was stripped. On a positive note, all parts are available.
    Keep us posted.

So got it home. 1000km round trip.

The reason the motor is basically in pieces is the crank case one cracked in its past and a replacement sourced. The project was never re assembled. I believe it was damaged on the motor on the left side. There is a dent on the exhaust. Some paint damage on the head there and 1 brand new piston. The stator / generator is missing and the part of it I did find was melted. Odd.

Pulled apart everything and laid out all the parts to see what I am left with. Over all it is mostly complete. The engine internals look new. It had very little use.

My plan is to make a bit of the 500 / 4 gp racer tribute out of it. So most of the stuff that is missing doesn't matter to me as I would be replacing it anyway. I will need help sourcing parts and job one will be getting the motor back together.

    Cheers!

If you have just half the fun I've had, you'll love it.
It's hard to see properly, but examine the faces of the rockers, the finish of the originals is not as durable as it should be. Honda 550 ones are near enough identical, as are many internals.
The best of luck with it.

Well, got my engine torn all the way down and ready to be sent off for Vapor Blasting. I have ordered some parts to convert to 504 alloys and swing arm as well as rear disk brakes. Just got in my parts from German and Italy

Snagged a full set of engine hardware as well as I was not entirely sure what I did and didn't have.

Of note some things were very curious under examination. The clutch plates are as new. I can also not see any signs of wear on the original drum brake shoes. Also the rocker arms and mating surfaces are all in excellent shape. It appears that it met its mechanical difficulties extremely early in life. I do know that the original case was cracked and a replacement sourced. I suspect it was on the left side as there was a damaged exhaust and other small parts that note some sort of impact. Odd But fun.

Does anyone know where to find a rear sprocket for the 504? 44 tooth. Thanks!

    What about benelliparts.de | Benelliteile ? 38€
Ah just noticed you asked for a 504, not for an LS, the 504 normally has 43teeth

    what about a 16 in front and a 504 43 in the back? You won't notice much difference, 17/44 is .386, 16/43 = .372
    the 16 is from a 350RS, but fits 500LS
