    Benelli 500 Four/Suzuki GS550 Pistons

As you know it is difficult getting new Benelli 500 four pistons. You can of course use 500 Honda four pistons but they are lesser compression ratio. High Comp Honda pistons are available but they cost a fortune. I notice recently that the Suzuk GS550 1977-82 also has a 56 mm bore plus oversize pistons are available and they have a nice peaked crown for High Comp ratio. What I don't know are the other dimensions to compare them with the Benelli items.
Has anyone explored this option before and if so can they point me in the right direction.
Can anyone give me the following dimensions for the GS550 Suzuki piston?
Distance in mm from centre line of piston pin to top edge of piston
Distance in mm from top edge of piston to the crown
    Diameter of piston pin
Overall height from bottom of skirt to top of piston crown.

Alternatively a better solution would be if anyone can lend me a GS550 piston I can make direct comparisons.

If this solution works it opens up a whole new source for Benelli pistons for both the fours and the sixes!
    Regards

    Ian

Suxuki Pistons Not Viable. Kawasaki GPZ550 Pistons?

    Hi All
Have followed hp on the Suzuki pistons and they are not suitable. Kawasaki GPZ 550 pistons can be used but the small end on the Benelli needs a bush made up as the piston pins are larger on the Benelli than they are on the Kawasaki. In addition the Kawaski pistons are 58 mm so you lose a couple of over bores but they have a good combustion shape and are probably a higher CR than the Benelli or the Honda.

    Hi p65crosser
I am new to this forum so I hope I going about this the right way [sorry if I'm not] I have just read your very helpful thread about Pistons for the LS 500 and I was hoping you might be able to help me with some information/advice on my 1979 Benelli LS 500, I am looking for 2 x sets of points and 2 x condenser's, do you have any idea where I could buy those parts or do you know if the Honda CB550 Points, condenser and timing plate will fit the LS 500 [someone said they are very close in design].
I would be very grateful for any info you have.
    Thanks
    MXPaul.

    Hi paul
Don't know your location. Better to complete this section of your profile as we have a diverse eclectic bunch here from across the world.
If you are in the UK the main source of parts is Selwyns Motorcycles of Haverhill in Suffolk. He has all the stock from the various importers over the years although he tends to specialise in the fours and sixes. Thats' the good news now the bad. At the moment he is not responding regularly to telephone calls and is not supplying mail order spares. He tragically lost his partner of many years Liz last year and it was she who was responsible for the spares ordering and invoicing. He is wading through the stock list and has about 80% of it on the computer so hopefully by mid 2019 he will be back selling spares again.
Now the goo news! Most of the world inventory is held by 2 German sources the biggest of which is Benelli Bauer. He bought all the inventory of Cosmopolitan Motors who were the Benelli US importer.
You can find full illustrated spares lists and part numbers at Benelli-Bauer.com
You cant fully place an order online but if you complete the order for a quote online Michael will get back to you by email. They have a very efficient service and you have to pay by paypal or bank transfer upfront but they are OK.
The second supplier who is very near to them is Detlef Burian whose website is benelliparts.de | Benelliteile
Again send him an email with part numbers and he will respond promptly. Pay by paypal and the goods will leave straight away.
Finally if you are in the UK i may be able to help. I think that I have a good set(s) of points and condensers off my racer project and you can have these for £5 plus postage. I will send them and if you dont like them send them back and don't pay!
Let me know if this is of any help.
If you want to try the points send me a PM with your email and we can talk off forum and exchange addresses.
Finally I dont think that Honda stuff fits straight on without modification. The best solution to all points problems is to fit a Sasche electronic ignition which is bullet proof. See www.elektronik-sachse.de
    regards

    Belray

    Hi Ian
Thank you for going to so much trouble to help me, all the information you have passed over to me is priceless!!! "I definitely owe you a beer"

I would very much like to take up your very kind offer of buying those points from you and giving them a try,

I am located in Essex in the U.K. is it o.k. to put my Email address on the Forum page? so we can talk direct and then I can get a Cheque or Paypal payment to you for the points and postage [I'm not sure what the forum rules are and if putting details on here is ok]

I fully intend to take up your advice on the electronic ignition but we are going to try and fire her up using the points as we hav'nt heard the Engine run yet, once we know the engine is fairly sound then we will put the new Ignition on.

Thanks again for your help and if you could just let me know the best way to contact you to sort out me buying those points from you that will be great.
    Many thanks
    Paul.
