    250 quattro master cylinder

    Morning all
Does any body know how the master cylinder comes apart. I've got a seals kit. My manual says use special tool to tap the piston out, but surely you must remove some sort of circlip or something else which stops the piston coming out in normal use. Obvs I don't have the special tool so is it just a drift? My manual is in italian by the way so I may be misunderstanding something
    Thanks in anticipation
    Mark

Hi Bill, I think no 8 in the diagram is a retaining circlip, this needs removing and suitable sized drift is used to push the piston out. It might be hard to remove if has not been used for a while!

Thanks russ. That's how I imagined it too, but there is no split or eyes etc in it. I'm a bit mystified

I think it’s a tapered washer that can be pushed out with a little persuasion. The new kit will have a new one in it!

I find a clout head roofing nail with the head ground down works as a nice drift, it doesn't take a lot of tapping. Remove the hose and drift out the piston through the hole.

I had my master cylinder lined. It is still awful but at least it bleeds now. I will be replacing it with a modern Brembo but have to fabricate a lever and pivot.

Hello, I've seen that type of ring #8 on another Italian master cylinder. It lightly expands and its purpose is to hold the dust seal #7 only in place in the bore. There should be very little tension holding the #8 ring in, so light pressure with a rod is all that is needed. Joe
