New here, Benelli Dynamo steering lock removal?

Hi, I am new to the forum. I have been a fan of the little Benelli's since the early 70's when I would visit them at the local Harley Dealer. Anyway, I was starting rebuild on a frame I had and was looking for a parts bike when I found a decent 1970 Dynamo, so this is now my restoration. Does anyone know how to remove the lock assembly from the frame without a key? I have two frames with locks and no keys. I am planning on powder coating and they will need to be removed.

Many European bikes used Neiman steering locks. It's hard to tell from your photo, but there's a good chance its a Neiman lock.
The bad news is that they can't be removed intact without a key, unless you're a dab hand at picking locks which most of us aren't. The better news is that those locks are still available, so destroying the old lock to get it out is not the end of the world.
Getting the lock barrel out involves drilling the lock. There are a couple of methods that I came across on the Laverda forum. They're somewhat contradictory in that one says not to drill through the tumblers, and the other does exactly that. Take your pick as to which method you use.

PS: The above method is for a BMW, but the lock is he same. Although the comments about the size of the locking hole in the steering stem may not apply to your Benelli.

PPS: At $24, this is the cheapest replacement lock barrel I could find. They're around $60 on eBay. Don't worry about it being a Vespa part. The Nieman locks are all the same.

If your lock isn't a Neiman, ignore everything above

If the Vespa source doesn't pan out. The locks are available from Stein Dinse for €19.90

Just reading the scooter website a bit more closely, they say there are different lengths of Nieman locks.

"Due to the different lengths that are required we have divided our cylinders locks into three different sizes. 'A' designates the complete length, 'B' the collar at the top, and 'C' the rear collar. A cylinder that is too long would stick out, a rear collar that is too small would not reach the steering column or the key bolt, with a front collar that is too wide, the cylinder will not fit in the steering column. We specify standard use, but recommend a comparison with the key cylinder. This is how to err on the side of caution! We also describe in detail how to take the measurement and how the cylinder can be removed if the key is lost."

Maybe this is the one you need https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/p...ering_16780000

I'm not sure what kind of lock it is or if they are the same on all the Dynamos. Here is a picture if it helps identify it.

Hi I drill out my steering lock to remove it, you find the brass easy to remove. I think the Benellimotobiclubgb might have a lock for that! The hold a small stock of 2 stroke parts
