    Homemade TNT 1130 tail tidy

    Hi all, when I bought my Cafe Racer, the first thing I did was to remove the huge billboard gantry UK-spec number plate bracket, given in South Australia motorcycle number plates are far smaller. But the stock alloy bracket from the exhaust(s) still hung out the back like a turd from a goldfish, and wasn't the neatest. Also, the previous owner had fitted small round smoked lens indicators with skulls on them, and I preferred a more factory look, at least for the lights themselves.

    So I sourced some Benelli-style" LED indicators on eBay and found a small LED number plate light at an auto parts store. As an aside, the LED lights work fine plug-and-play, but I'm intrigued that when I use the hazard light switch, only half of the LED bulbs in the units flash, when all of the bulbs flash on one side when using the turn signal switch. Some hazard flash is better than no hazard flash, but I wasn't sure how to account for it technically. Any ideas? Half the voltage? Polarity gets wonky? Curious but not a problem.


    I then designed and fabricated a tail tidy bracket to mount these components as neatly as possible. I was keen to have the number plate be in front of the tail pipe exits, to avoid soot buildup, and to protect any plastic components from exhaust heat. I also wanted it visually unobtrusive from the back and sides. And to be bendable by hand to ensure easy repair if it gets biffed, or to get it nice and level. (My homemade YZF600R bracket has been crooked for years... - shout out to Yamahamad from the old days when I was more active on the YZF forum.) And to have a little shelf to stash all the wiring on, but not catch water and stones. I'm pretty happy with the end result, although, in the spirit of Project Binky, I spent way too much time on something that appears quite simple in retrospect.

    Here it is on the bike. I was delighted that it ended up being level, and very unobtrusive from the side. I have some mild concern about the plate hitting the tyre, but it would have to be a huge bump with a heavy passenger, so I'll deal with that if it ever happens. I imagine it would get pushed up rather than pulled forward, so it could be bent back again by hand after jettisoning the passenger.

    Looks great to me .. not sure what's going on with the hazards ... maybe a duff earth connection.

    Good call, Stingerwolf. I thought I'd labeled them correctly before I fitted them, but now looking at photos online, the flatter edge definitely is the top. I'll swap them over, and do some multimeter testing of the hazard lights while I'm at it.

    Pre Benelli, ZR50SL, RS100, BMW R50/5, RD400, CB350K4, GPZ550, CB900, 750 KATANA, GSXR750, FIREBLADE, TL1000S, 955i Daytona, GSXR 1100L, GSXR1000K6.....

    Now; 2003 900 Tornado, 2008 900 Tornado, 2009 CR 1130, 2010 1130 Tornado...and the diesels...Ducati 848 for when four italians are not enough... a 750 srad ....when 5 italians are too many.......and now an '81 Katana......for those mid life crisis days....

    It's funny you say this I always fancied the stock café racer bracket. The stock sport evo one was horrendous in comparison. Looks good though... maybe I'll change mine out....

    Oh wow, you mean like this? That is quite the turd-dangler. I bet those prompt a lot of modifications.

    Australian motorcycle rego plates are heaps smaller than the plate holder part of the stock bracket. All of the three Cafe Racers and one Century Racer advertised on bikesales.com.au at present have aftermarket tail tidies, as it's probably (definitely!) easier to sling coin at it than fab up a custom jobby like mine.

    Looks good mate, same cans I'm guessing. I bought a tail tidy from Germany, was a bit of a struggle to fit but cleans it up.

    I had set of the indicators you have fitted they were pretty nasty, I hoiked them for the ones on now. May be part of your problem.
