Tornado "gold" allen bolts and other "gold" questions.

Bit of an odd one perhaps :P
Where do you good folks get the OEM gold-coloured allen blots as seen on the brake/clutch lever clamps and a few other places ?

Has anyone any ideas on painting regular stainless allen bolts with the ohlins gold colour ? Anyone know the paint code for such a shade ?

    Cheers,
    James.

Are you referring to ohlins fork body gold? Or the clutch perch gold? Forks are going to be done with an electro-plating system. Any metalworking shop will have contact info for the company they use for black oxide and anodizing services. These types of finishes require a very specific system of application only found in manufacturing or restoration, or jewelery making shops. I hope this helps a bit.

I am useless. If you can't get the info here i would recommend having the color scanned at an auto paint shop that has the ppg unit. Downfall is........you'd probably have to refinish all hardware with the new color as no matter how close they come it will not match the original, don't let them tell you otherwise. The technology is good, but not perfect. I learned this the hard way. Mike.

They are just electro plated allen bolts James.
You can do this to any steel bolts and it's not expensive either.
Would guess you have plenty places to have this done in the UK.

    Cheers

Hi Per, thanks for that. There is nowhere in Ireland that does Electroplating that is affordable on such a small scale. Perhaps in the Uk, but I dont know.

What do you think they are electroplated with? Its too dull to be gold.

Zinc oxide and then run through a vibratory or tumble finish with a corn cob or walnut shell media just like brass bullet cases. I will state though that the finish on the bolts may not be tumbled at all. This would explain the somewhat dull finish compared to the standard zinc oxide finishes which are shiny. Sometimes the finish you want has to be put over another plating finish to get quality adhesion. Brass cannot be chromed without first plating the brass with copper(just an example). This could get ugly. I know a local guy that owns a plating shop right here in my little corner of hell. I will send him a picture of the bolts and get his input. Til then...........look away..........look away......yest ye be burned by the horror that is my ........bolts?
