You never get bored when riding a tnt
Went out for a ride today and suddenly the temp reading was near the red line. first i started thinking hmm is it stuck there since it dossent drop down when i ride. When i came home it was boiling inside the engine and
noticed that it was leaking from the head gasket

I have written alex at maniac for what parts i need for the job.
Finally the weather is nice here and then my bike brakes down

Cant help thinking what caused the head gasket to blow
I would hate sending it to a makanic to get it fixed only to find out it still overheats and blows the new gasket
Replacing the gasket is a bit over my skills and i hate paying a mekanic that dossent know enything abaut benelli to try and fix it
Arrrrrgghhhh

One cause of over heat is the dome nut that secures the impeller in the water pump. Easy to remove the outer part of water pump where hose connects and have a look, The nut can rust and dissintergrate then it allows the impeller to move off the drive shaft and stop circulating the coolant.

Thx Colin
Yes i also talked to The Dane from the forum last night. I will be checking that and the thermostat before taking it all apart.
I hope its one of those cause they are a easy fix and hope the gasket only was leaking a bit because of the high temp oil.
I could hear it boil in there so i think the oil has to be changed also

Talked to Alex today he said to leave the themostat and drive without it it will make it run 3 to 5 degrees cooler. Sounds good to me i could always use a bit cooler running bike :D
I went for a ride to Brisbane a couple of weeks ago. Setting off from Canberra it was 6C then fell to 3C from the Abercrombie River to Oberon (about 70 km), and raining. It didn't hit double figures until 40km north of Bathurst. If I had no thermostat, I would have been riding 4 hours and 350 km with the ECU fueling the engine rich - ie. in warm-up mode. As it was the temp gauge didn't rise above the 80C mark, but I'm sure it was only that high because the thermostat was doing it's job. So, the point of this story is, if you are going to remove the thermostat, there may be consequences.

Thx Errol
Yes i also came to that conclusion and have ordered a used thermostat. But for now during the summer i think i will go without and see what it does.In the fall when the temp drops and maybe then i will put it back in :D

Does anyone know what pattern or similar themostat can be fitted rather than buying genuine benelli supplied items.

Benelli obviously just buy in a bog standard aftermarket supplier thermostat.

Failing that i'll take a working one into my local car parts shop and see what they have.

When you find an alternative, and I'm certain you will, let us know and I'll add it to my list of alternative parts.

ciao tuitti

well you´re right Errol, but only when you´ll ride under 10°C temp outside, if there is only some degrees more the thermostat is useless.
we ride every year in Spain in Winter, in Calafat, morning Temp is there around 10- 12 °C and it is no problem to get the TnT engine warmed up.
mostly i come back from a 20 minuts turn with more than 85 °c oil and around 92-95°c Water temp.
after lunch break when we have around 15-18°C outside there is always more than 95°c Water.
And i ride all my bikes without Thermostat, sure i will not ride at 4°c here that is far to cold for me and in my opinion not funny ;)

ciao ALex

Hey Alex, it definitely wasn't fun and I wouldn't recommend it. My knees were frozen and if it weren't for my Richa Goretex gloves (best investment I've made in a long while) my hands would have been frozen too. I was paying close attention to my core and I didn't actually start to shiver, although it must have been imminent. After 70 km of that it started to warm up and by 100 it was bliss at 7C. I stopped for fuel then, even though I didn't need it.
Curiously the bike wasn't that economical at those stupidly low temps. It only did 10.4 kpl. Pretty sure the ECU never got out of the warm-up phase and was running it rich. The next tank was mostly in double figures temperature wise, and the economy rose to 14.5 kpl, where it normally is when the AT isn't working.

Seriously thinking of changing over to an electric water pump and temperature controller then dicing the thermostat. That would improve the flow by heaps and maybe keep it cooler below 70 kph in the warmer months.

Update the head gasket is not blown its was only because of the overheating from the thermostat not opening
im a happy man again. Everything runs great with no thermostat so far just below the fan comming on temp when riding and when standing still the fans comes on right away to keep everything cool
Thx for the help guys

Hi Gorgh
No i gave up on finding one and bought a used one on ebay. I crashed my bike at the end of the sommer so i never got it installed. The insurence company sold it as a parts bike to a dealer
