Hi I was looking around for a kit because Maniac Motors are charging 10 EUR per shim so that's 120 EUR if I replace all of them+ shipping so I think for that amount of money I can afford to order a kit like this and choose whatever shims I need !
What is your opinion? More to the point will they fit. It says they are 8mm in diameter?
Thanks

Before you buy anything, I suggest you remeasure the cam clearances, take off the cams and fish out your shims.
Inspect them all , keep each one with the bucket numbered to your engine.
Look if you can see what they were originally, if not measure the edge of the shim. (undamaged/dented).
Use Errol,s method to find what they have deformed to.
If the difference is what you need to get to, you could just buy what you need, in new shims.

I would guess you are looking at car tuning shims which would not be designed to be used on super hard valve springs, bouncing up and down at 10000 rpm.
You might be ripping it all apart again in 1000klms as those shims fail.

There you go, you have 24 spare shims already, just keep them in the relevant buckets. I always number left to right. 3; 2;1 across the engine. 1&2 exhaust 3, 3&4 Inlet 3, 5&6 ex 2, 7&8 in 2, 9&10 ex 3 and 11&12 inlet 3, then you don,t mix them up.
Nothing worse than fiddling through them trying to find the missing one.
Have fun.

Ask Chris for his D2 shims & mention I suggested this. These will not dent in a Tornado and I assume the R160 uses similar springs.

Today I measured everything again but it's still the same. So I took out the buckets out to see what thickness shims I would need. I was hoping to use any of the shims I already had from the 899 engine but no luck. I wrote a email to maniac motors ordering 12 shims.
These are the valve pads I need to get or something close.
I noticed that the buckets are a bit different to the 899 buckets.

One more question about the torque of 12nm according to the manual and should I use thread lock on the bolts ? What is your experience?

I also spoke with Chris but the shipping alone is 150 Euro he said so I decided to go to maniac. One shim is 13,50 Euro.

Any markings on the shims you have taken out ?have you measured accurately at the edge of the shim.
Most of mine started at 2.325 to 2.375, a couple at 2.350. It is random that the shim with its thickness marked sometimes faces the bucket cap , you can still see the markings, and others it has the valve hammering away at it.

That is still a mean old price for a valve shim , Christ, 8 mm dia and a couple of mill thick.
In theory the shim has worn, so I would expect thicker shims to return to tolerance, unless of course the valve has settled into the valve seat as it has worn. The springs are mega strong.
I don,t think I I thread locked mine, just torqued them up and then re checked them at the same torque.

150 Euro! That must have been via Fedex. If you're not in a steaming hurry get him to post them. That'd be 1/5th the price
Thanks

I measured with a ball of ball bearing the center and overall the difference was only 0.01.

Received my valve pad yesterday and installed them this morning.
I had a small hiccup after putting the buckets back and torquing everything.
I forgot to skrew in the chain tensioner so when I turned over the engine the cam chain slipped off the intake cam gear 3 notches.
So I had to undo all the bolts again and position the intake cam correctly again.

I have tested the bike today and everything seems much smoother than before.
No stalling, better low idle and more responsive throttle. Also seems less coughing or sputtering when crawling around town at low rpm.
So you were right a job worth doing.

I want to eliminate the small kickbacks from the starter gear.
It happens sporadically it happened 3 times in the last week when turning the bike off.
95 percent at the time there's nothing.
Seems to happen more often if the bike is started cold and then turned off

I am syncing the throttle body tomorrow.
Will that help ?
