Hello

my oil filter leaked a small weep of oil on my tornado 1130. It was properly tight when I undid it, I cleaned the surfaces installed it handtight few months ago and have never had a problem before. Hiflo 553 filter.

Do you guys really torque down the filter to 15+20Nm as per manual? I thought to try that this time.

Hand tight is all I ever do,

Which is roughly 20 Nm +- 5Nm depending on how strong you are and how oily your hands are 😁
I can assure my filters have been secured but I think my hand torque with a little dirty gloves is half from that😁

It must be some dirt was left under the gasket that resulted in small leak. Because the filter was tight, I took it off with oil filter socket.

I also had the securing band.

I will double check the sealing surfaces this time and maybe even go trough those with wet sandpaper. 1000-2000grit for example. in case of new leak, have to think other actions :)

But if you get some dirt on the sealing surface, even the securing band wouldn't help
You have a compressing rubber seal on the filter, you surely wipe the surface having removed the old filter, smear of clean oil on the new rubber seal and hand tighten. The clamp ensures it does not loosen. Never had a problem with 6 different triples in over Ten years. Got Five Benelli triples and always do my own servicing and repairs.

What of the instructions you didn't do in the past? 😁 I am guilty by not torquing the filter properly. Only for the first time doing to get the feel and then just by hand 😎
me too, quilty of just eyeballing it and calling it a day. This time the leak caught me off guard😁

My wrist torqued the filter to 8Nm measured by my poor torque wrench. Finished off by torquing down to 12Nm. I am not going to try 20Nm on hiflo filter.

This time sealing surface cleaned very good and good drop of oil on the filter gasket. Lets see if it works this time.

It appears the seal is still not perfect on the filter. What bothers me is the flat gasket on the hiflo 553. Usually its o ring and not flat. I would like to buy benelli "oem" oil filter but I guess only available on aliexpress. Are these legit filters, anyone?
I just found this on AliExpress: €7.83 | Motorcycle Oil Filter Spare Parts 0180107101000 for Benelli 899 TNT Century Racer 900 Tornado 1130 Cafe Racer 1130 TNT 2007-2015

I have never seen oil filter with o ring type gasket. Always it had flat type 🤔

I mean round"ish" like that, usually those are like this atleast here, the hiflo 553 was first with completely flat rubber part. The one that I took off and not leak had round rubber like this.

my first idea is to try different filter and if it does not work then take off the filter base and run it flat on the mill or glass table with sandpaper.

Is it possible that t.he threads have picked up on the filter housing and you think it’s tight but not going fully home ?

Re-tightened and all cleaned up super well. When hot, oil weeps out. I dont get it, I have to diassemble this.

I might try hf303 filter from my old honda 900rr rrx. It has different style gasket, the hf553 gasket is square. I have previously also used this filter and newer had a problem. I suspect now same as what DenH said.

Does anyone remember the size of the hex key required for oil filter base bolt? I could go and buy one before diassembly.

I need to buy correct size since I have none in the range 11mm-16mm and I guess the hex is something like 13mm
