Baffled

Now I'm baffled:

I thought the 900s went something like this... can you correct me?

1 - Round Guzzi Le Mans Fairing
2 - Square fairing with two thick stripes no pinstripe on rest of body matt black tank top
3 - Square fairing pin strips mat black top of tank these were the ones Motorcycle city knocked out dirt cheap
4 - The Cornetto. Pearl white and blue or red, fairing and forks off the Guzzi Le Mans 3/4, clocks off the Guzzi Cali but with groovy dials, chrome grab rail. Top hairdressers transport.
5 - The last of the factory bikes made from what they had, some unusual colour schemes. I thought Lawrence's bike had to be one of these.
6 - Specials made by various dudes in Germany and elsewhere.

Have you got that picture of Joey Dunlop's Agrati racing 6 with the craziest 'zorst that has to be the weirdest 6 on the block.

Ta

Chris

Well spotted Chris and I can see why you are confused.

My bike is actually a Mk4 but with the classic red paint scheme. It was one of the very last ones produced in 88/89, although it wasn't registered until 1993.

The give away is the engine which was only produced in black on the MK4's. The previous versions all had unpainted engines like this.

For what it's worth, here's my take on the differences between the versions:-

Mk1 - Round headlight with no headlight fairing
Mk2 - Round headlight with Guzzi Le Mans style headlight fairing
Mk3 - Round headlight with large headlight fairing, unpainted engine, Chrome exhaust
Mk4 - Square headlight with large headlight fairing, black engine and black mirror chrome exhaust

750vs900 SEI

Hi
Yes Lawrences mk4 did confuse me with the classic paint scheme but the Series 1 900 SEI was conceived in 1978 and did not have any handlebar
fairing few were made before moving onto mk2 with the Le Mans fairing then came mk3 with the square fairing, then several differeing paint schemes re
Mk4 but that was it but anyone who dares to stick their neck out re Italian bikes and the differing versions will come unstuck because there are bikes that were bult on the turn from one version to another with bits and pieces that were lying aroud at the time which could receive a designation of mk11/2 etc etc Great looking bike Lawrence its good see pics of it. I have some pics of Joey and Keith Martin on the six around the IOM Ill see if I can find em

To me the 750 was the one to have but when i was in the market to purchase all those years ago the 900 was th beast of the day ,having owned now for many yrs to me was superb in handling ,sound and quality of components and never to date has let me down ,the only reason for change was to purchase a tre in 03 when they as u no launched the superbike .i will say i had never owned a modern day superbike so the tornado scared me to death when i picked it up after riding the 900 for many years ,but having said that when ever i ride the 900 i will say this to me is still as good to ride as the day i bought it all those yrs ago.

but wish just maybe a 750 should be owned just for the beauty of the pipes .

Wise words indeed Steve

If anyone is interested in the numbers, I believe that only 1,878 900's were produced in total between 1978 to 1989 and 3,200 750's were produced from 1974 to 1977.

If I remember rightly, Motorcycle City bought the last of the 900's (and the 254 and 354 for that matter) in 1981, and were knocking them out for ÂŁ1999. Ahh, if only I had dug deep...!:rolling:

Interesting thread, guys!

Cheers:D
Ian

Or maybe I don't remember rightly....
