Hi all,

I have had my '03 tre for around 6 weeks and have enjoyed getting used to the performance characteristics and loved every moment. All was going well until ........ this afternoon when cruising along at 30mph I heard a clattering noise - not the rhythmic low rev triple sound but an altogether more sinister noise akin to a bolt flying around somewhere in the engine! Dipped clutch, pulled over, turned off, scratched my head and vowed under no circumstances to attempt to start it............ Being an impatient fool I attempted to start it and sounded like the starter was whizzing at speed but not turning the bike over.
I am not a mechanic and have no idea what the problem could be (oil is at the right level and had no warning lights) so I need to get it moved to someone who does know what they are doing with Nellies, preferably local to Epsom in Surrey so if anyone has any recommendations I would be very grateful.
All the best

Many thanks for the reply John,

I checked it out and what you say make sense and in a way I hope it is - just need to find someone good near me to undertake the repair.

thanks again

Not a Benelli dealer but you could try InMoto in Croydon? They specialise in Aprilia and MotoGuzzi (or did at last check) so are fairly Italian-aware

Thank you Katie,

I have been on Benelli.co.uk and they give Hartgate motorcycles as the nearest Nellie dealer to me (although when I called them the chap that answered the phone didn't know if they repaired them or not!) but I will also try Inmoto if you would reccomend them?

kind regards

Many thanks Pip,

I am am resigned to the fact that I will have to ship it somewhere and I have had dealings with Bennets in the past, they were excellent but as you say quite a way North! It's gotta go somewhere to be mended so I will have a chat with all 3 and ask their thoughts & availability.

Thanks again Pip.

Kind regards

Well, I used to take my Aprilias there (sprag clutch issues also not unknown). They were kind of old-school bike shop regarding communications (you know, crap) but were very good with the bike. They were meticulous about servicing, including putting indicator marks on replacement bits so it would always show if another garage 'forgot' to change parts :) Worth giving them a call at the very least to find out if they're happy to work on the Nellie?

I'm sorry to say Steff but it sounds like a Z25 fault to me, the starter drives that to turn the engine over.
Unlikely the sprag clutch would fail whilst the engine was running as its not really doing anything then. Did the bike have the mods done to uprate the Z25 gear and shaft prior to you getting it....

The Benelli website can be a little out of date with regards to dealers still servicing and selling the brand:rolleyes:. I'd go for the ones listed above but be prepared to travel.

Forza Italia in Silverstone are an 1 1/2 hours away from you. They have ceased Benelli trading but may still fix your Nelli. Give them a call. There are courier companies that will trailer your bike there and back for a reasonable price. I used some on eBay.

Hi Steve,

I checked on the forum before buying the bike so was aware of the upgrades and called Moto GB to check. I was advised (by Simon I think) that the bike had mods done which is I why I felt safe to buy it. Bike has done just over 5k miles so it would be disappointing if the upgraded Z25 failed and not sure what, if any, recourse I would have?

This is is sounding like it could become very expensive!

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Klink,

I have a friend with a van that could drop it somewhere local so that could be an option. I am sure that all of the recommendations are competent, however, I have had experience with an electrical issue on an old lotus which I spent hundreds having checked out with no success - eventually found a retired lotus mechanic working out of a farm local to me who managed to sort it in 10 minutes and asked nothing for it so he got all my business thereafter...... Which was quite a lot! I am looking for something similar with the Nellie, a highly competent mechanic with experience of working on them who is fair - as Katie alluded to in her earlier reply that sadly does not always appear to be the case!

Thanks again for your reply

Thanks for additional info Katie - I did try them but they recoiled in horror when I got to "Benel" lol! ...... Said they wouldn't touch it so looks like a jaunt up North.

A Few options

Hi,

I know Red Dog Motorcycles in Edenbridge was well known for the south east but has closed down now.

I did hear the Mechanic from Red Dog started his own garage nearby and still does servicing on the Nelli's. Does anybody know who this was?

I Think it might be J B Motorcycles. https://www.facebook.com/JBMotorcycles

I also know of somebody I use in Longfield Kent who worked on mine and I know works on a few others and he is called BBS Racing. Mike Baxter is the Mechanic and works on Ducati bikes as well.

Motorcycle Repairs, Servicing and MOT

Hope this helps and you get back on the road soon.

Certainly dont let it put you off.....

Many thanks Doug and everyone else that has been kind enough to offer advice,

Having talked with KJM (Glen was excellent) and others it seems increasingly likely that it is an issue with Z25 but obviously will not know for sure until they whip it out. Disappointing as I did check with Simon at MotoGB before buying the bike and he confirmed that upgrades (clutch basket & Z25) had been done, we will see if this is correct once it has been removed.

I am having the bike collected Thursday by a guy who comes highly recommended and is reasonably local so I should know what the problem is by next week and will post an update on this thread.

It certainly hasn't put me off Doug, the bike is in fabulous condition and I was bound to have an issue with it sooner or later - just came a little sooner than I had anticipated! Looking forward to it coming back better and stronger than before.

Thanks again Doug et al for your advice, very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Steff
