The last two are Mustangs (I used to have models of them as a kid) and the first one is a Lightning aircraft (dead give away with the stubby cut off nose and the swept back wings:D )

Snap! :D
North American P51 Mustang. Fitted with an Allison engine from the You-Ess-Aye it was a pretty crap fighter until they fitted a good old British power plant, the Rolls Royce Merlin built under licence (by Packard?). It became a legendary fighter bomber, used to great effect in 1944-45 as a long range bomber escort.

Sounds good mate, what actualy happens on the open day ?

They just blast the old jets up and down the runway, you get really up close to them.

there's loads of static aircraft exhibits there as well.

If the vulcan is in its hangar you can have a look round that too, altho i think it will be on air show duty that weekend, details of which are on here.

Piccys

Nice pics guys...very nice. I have flown P-51s and P-38s but am still trying to score a Spitfire flight. Would love to be able to meet up ther with you all but...the sand still calls my name!

Maybe on the way home from here I could come through England for a day or two and stay with Lloyd...we could all meet down at his house and go out for a night on the town in London followed by a day at Reddog or something like that.

LOve the old spitfire too, just finished reading a lot of the books written by the pilots from the battle of britain, they must have had melons for balls.

how many decibels???

I've gotta agree with you on the vulcan fraser  although I still think the old (cold war warrior) the lightning is king:bow:

she (the mighty vulcan) flew at an air display in bowness a couple of weeks ago and when I heard her roar it made my nut bag go all tight and tingly

A good read is tarnish 6 the biography of test pilot jimmy dell, or if you want a good laugh try brasso blanco and bull, it's about national service and had me laughing out loud in work :rolling:
