Just thought I'd post a message to all potential forum members.

We are getting an average of 7-10 new registrants a day that we are rejecting based on their internet profiles. We are getting inundated by these new registrations and we approve each manually by researching their email addresses. If they are from known spammer domains or do not submit complete information during their registrations, most likely their registrations will be deleted.

Sorry but it has to be this way. It is a lot more work but I will not allow porn, viagra or other forms of unsolicited offers on this board.

So if you are a legitimate user and want to make sure your registration is not deleted, please fill in your application as accurately as you can.

I run several forums and stopped the spam signups cold by requiring a user name and password (using htacess) to view the register page.

This info is in plain view on the front of the site. But Spammers (& Bots) all go straight to the register page so never guess the obvious. This is because they use Google to locate strings such as "forum/register.php".

Using this method I haven't had a single spam signup in 5 months on all three of my forums (I was getting up to 10 a day).

Thanks for understanding. It's not too much work just a few minutes a day. I gotten quite good at spotting the spammers. :) Hint: I watch for their registered timezone. Unlikely we'll have any Benellitistis in Einewetok!

HTAccess is a thought. I've heard about it but to be honest, I am not that good to figure out how to implement it. :)

Piece of piss to set up.

1. You need to create a text file called ".htaccess" with the following in it (remember to edit password location) and stick it in the forum directory.

Code:
AuthUserFile /path/to/your/file/.htpasswd_forums
AuthType Basic
AuthName "benelli"

<Files "register.php">
  Require valid-user
</Files>
2. Then create another text file called ".htpasswd_forums" containing the user name & password for access. This can be located anywhere really (remember to point htaccess to it). Use something simple like "benelli" (use the following line in your .htpasswd_forums file to use "benelli").

Code:
benelli:DBU1yP./LjUck
3. Finally stick some text like this saying that a user name and password is required to register and what it is at the top of the forum and you are done!

To Reduce the amount of Spam on the Forum a password is now required to Register. Use "benelli" which is case sensitive for both user name and password.

Mike

PS - you can use this handy tool to create custom .htaccess & password files
