Having high-jacked Borat's thread on seat covers, I thought it best to start a new thread regarding tank covers, in Benelli colours, which will take the Baglux range of tank bags.
Universal bags are either magnetic; no good for our Nellies; or strap-on affairs which can cause cosmetic damage; so a Baglux system would fit the bill. Some while ago, however, Baglux told me they would not be making one for Tornado's - ever.
Last year, I contacted LICS, who were planning to make just such a thing, with leather and vinyl options. However, after numerous phone calls and e-mails to them, during which they told me what good progress they were making with it, they never ever called me back, and no covers materialised. I gave up on them when they missed the deadline for the Highland Gathering in May.
The thought now is to find another upholsterer who may be prepared to make them.
Interested? If so, post away, we can get an idea of numbers, and, between us, maybe come up with somebody to make them, at a sensible price. No reason why they couldn't be made for TNT's, Tre K's etc as well.
I know there is a type which has a rigid base, and bolts on to the fuel filler, but they look very small, whereas a Baglux tankbag holds sufficient for a weekend away.:D
Over to you...;)

Cheers:D

Love baglux and have used them for years....however they are not immune to damaging the tank at all, and I was most disappointed to see the state of my vfr tank when the cover came off. This was a commuter and parked in london bays, with the crap of a winter commute to contend with but still beware anything strapped to the tank will cause a problem if grit or anything gets underneath.
Now thats out the way I'm in.

That's true. It is easy just to leave the cover on all the time, but it really does need to be taken off regularly to clean under it.
Note to myself - remove tank cover off my Fazer and clean the tank...:rolling:

That's 2 of us, then:clap:

An Old tank of say a tornado could be passed to someone who could use to create a template. i have kurts green one here and if he's still holding on doing the switch of his bike to green i'm sure he'd make this available . baglux told me to go to there premises in Abergele and stay as long as it took to fing a cover that fitted closest.

Closest fit:rolleyes: I cannot think of any tank that is anywhere like the shape of a tornados....and surely we've all thanked the lord it is not as bad on the knackers as it looks:rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

Fantastic idea Ian.. when you say "Benelli colours" i take it you mean Yellow? :rolling:

On a more serious note i would definitely be interested. I generally use my tail pack which fits a treat but extra weight on the arse end just encourages the RS to wheelie ossifer! a tank bag would be fantastic as I miss that level of functionality on the Tornado..

Oh and for god's sake Ian please dont say "strap on affairs" you will have Al all hot and bothered :rolling:

That is the one I mentioned, which fits onto the filler. The only bags I have seen in that system seem to be quite small, although there is one which they say is 22 litres; although it doesn't look it...
They look more stable than a conventional tankbag, and although the bag itself is quite expensive, around ÂŁ145, the tank adaptor is only ÂŁ22. I don't know if that includes VAT.
LICS were talking in the region of ÂŁ150 for just the cover, in leather, or ÂŁ120-130 in vinyl. I am sure that it could be sourced for less than that. For those like me who already have the Baglux tankbag already, that's it; job done.
Maybe, though, the quick-lock is the answer...?

Cheers

I think the problem with the quick lock will be the position of the filler cap on the tank. I looked into these and the dimensions of the bags in relation to the locking system seemed to suggest they would not sit very well on our tanks. Aside from errols system I reckon the baglux type system is the best bet. Let me see what pp say.

Pain

Trouble with tank bags they alway shift around when they are used with straps. :(
Your better off with a rucksack. I have a bum-bag which turns into a expandable rucksack. Neat bit of kit and cost ÂŁ10 from the BMF Show.:D

Bad enough my leathers wearing the paint off, let alone some brillo pad on the tank!

The idea with the Baglux system is that, even if the bag moves a bit, the tank cover it fits to doesn't, which avoids the problem you described. It is a tried and tested system which works. There are plenty of cheap tankbags about, but that is not what we are talking about here. Pay attention!:rolling:
You wouldn't want to take enough for a week away, over 2500 miles, in the bumbag/rucksack you described, I'm sure! That is what the Italian trip would be. The idea is to provide luggage for long hauls, not short trips.

It would be great if you can talk to the guy near you, Colin, about the Baglux, and see what he comes up with. We have several who are interested, and I'm sure others would be if they saw them.

As Angus said, they can be provided with a tank to take measurements, or maybe they can do that straight off a bike in the first instance, and then go back for a fitting. I can provide a Baglux bag for positioning of attachment points, so, with luck, it should be fairly straightforward.

Cheers:D

I spoke to pp last week and they said that they used to make tank covers but haven't for a while as baglux have the market "sewn up" :rolling: she did say they might do it though. I am taking my bike in this week sometime so they can take a look at the seat and tank and advise. Will keep u posted.

That's good news, Col. It means they have the 'know how' to make them, which is one hurdle overcome. Hopefully, knowing that Baglux won't make them, and if they think they can sell a few, they may go for it!
If I can assist... etc

Naaa Ian.
I'd either have purchased a proper sports tourer to start with or do 2500 miles by some cheap flight, and take the cases with and get there on a loan bike! ;)

In my opinion...tornado's are cracking sports bikes, but no long distance machines.

13 tornado riders last scotland trip might disagree with you :D Not ideal for sure, but I have to say I found it perfectly fine for most of the day riding as long as you are moving and keeping the weight off the wrists.
Would love to have a TreK as well but hey, get more kudos for touring an LE :rolling:

Gotta agree with Borat, the Tornado aint bad at all on a long run. Lots of leg room for the taller rider (i am 6'3) and not bad on the wrists as long as speed it kept up (thats my excuse anyway!)

Done 2-300 miles in a day on a few occassions now and no complaints.

Never liked the idea of a tank bag, just seemed alot hassle, together with worries over the paint.
Hate rucksacks given the pain they inflict over a long journey!
My kids got me a set of throw-overs for xmas a year or two ago (from either m&p or busters i think), not an expensive set but have proved ideal. Held together by by large velcro straps they can be adjusted to fit the taper of the tail -piece and come with fitted with soft foam panels on their inner surfaces, so no harm to the paint.
They came with straps to attach to the pillion pegs and never budge, even when adding my brother large bag on top as in the pics.

The Tornado will never make a full-on tourer but it does a surprisingly good job as an all-rounder.

I quite agree, Ian! That looks a good set-up there. I have throw-overs, and a tailpack, but have only used the tailpack on the Tornado.
The advantage of a tank bag is that you can have stuff more readily accessible; phone, camera, glasses, sunglasses, cash for tolls, paperwork etc, and keep your map and itinerary in the clear plastic window on top, which I find hugely useful.
