Battery ..... !!!

Hi All

Mmmm ... strange one this, if anyone can help!

Use an Optimate 3 sp battery charger to keep battery top shape. Been fine all summer, went in to check the bike yesterday & the red light was on the charger. Reading the instructions it says either the battery is knackered or something on the bike is draining the battery. I did have the alarm on ( 1st time I had put the alarm on whilst in my garage ) so assumed it was this. Turned the alarm off & re-turned the charger on. All appeared Ok. Went to work last night, checked with the wife at about 21.00hrs & she assured me both green lights were on ( means all Ok ) however, on returning & checking at 07.00 this morning the red warning light is back on !!!!

Now removed battery from bike & am recharging on the bench. It does say if it goes red now that the fault is with the battery ( fingers crossed it is this problem ) otherwise it will be on the bike .... where do I start on the bike then ?????

Tried to re look through the forum as I was sure some of you had fitted more powerful battery to there bike's but due to the awkward size it has to be a specific type?

Anyone re-fitted an after market battery to there TRE & if so can you give me a few pointers as to where I should go, what to ask for ( Ahms wise! ) & approx price expected to pay?

Due to these bikes having been hanging around at dealers before sale ( mines on a 06 plate but believe it to be an 04 bike ) the batteries on the bike are now 3 - 4 years old so I am really hoping this turns out to be the problem!

Any ideas people !!!!

Cheers

speedy just a long shot, check the inline fuse between the optimiser and the battery.
I had a weird charging problem last year after alot of searching it turned out to be bad connection in the fuse holder, gave it a good clean streched the spring inside the fuse holder and hey presto it was fixed.

Thanks all for the usual prompt replies!

Checked the battery on the bench when I got in from work this morning, been on charge for a good 15hrs, & NO red light .... so will assume battery is a-ok!

Put the battery back on the bike ( checked with digital tester ... shows 13.1v ) alarm part sets via immobilizer automatically after 1 min ..... checked again 1 1/2 hrs later & now showing 13.2v .... so assume it may be something to do with the optimate 3 charger?

Will remove the inline fuse & clean as suggested & leave bike for a few days to see if voltage drops significantly .... if not will put optimate back on & re - test over another few days.

Will post results next week for those interested ....

Cheers 'me' dears

From what I know Optimates work on measuring the voltage and resistance across the battery to work out the charge level. If the reistance goes high then it assumes a dead battery.

So are you sure you havent just got a dodgy connection, or tripped/run over the wire at some point fracturing the cable.

I have an optimate II that needs a wiggle to get the thing to think that it is not disconnected (disconnected shows the same dead battery red light on mine as a dead battery, ie 100% resistance).

Sorry for the delay in replying Speedyone, what happened was, I contacted optimate about the problem they said it would be the optimate which was faulty and to return it for repair, however because it was out of warranty and I would have to pay I didn't bother.
The fault doesn't happen all the time but when it does I just disconnect from the bike switch the power off for 30min's and then connect and switch on again and it's ok.
I would say it happens about 30% of the time so I just live with it, its been like this for about 6 months and hasn't got any worse.
Hope this helps
