So coming home from a ride last night and just as I pulled up at home, a horrible grinding noise appeared from the front end.

Initially I thought that something had gotten caught or trapped on the tyre, wheel or disc. However upon inspection there was nothing trapped/rubbing.

So it has to be the front wheel bearings, I have a replacement set ready for installation, what I need from you guys is instructions/help on changing said wheel bearings. Is there a particular way of doing it? Tools needed etc? Taking the wheel off etc is fine, done it lots of time, just wondering about removing/installing the actual bearings.

I used a round piece of bar with a nice flush end to knock it out. Just take your time

Any other tips Tom? Do you have to remove one side first or everything from the right or left etc? Some bikes have notches/gaps in the wheels spacer that let you get a drift onto the bearing.

It should all be I the workshop manual but I haven't it to hand at the mo, I usually knock out the old at Tom said and drift the new ones in using a large socket, But one thing I always do is warm up some good quality grease and ensure the entire bearing is well loaded with it allow to cool and wipe the excess off before fitting.

Don't matter what side tap the sleave that goes through the wheel to one side will give you a bit more of a lip then work your way around the edge of the bearing tapping firm but not hard when the one sides out then do the other. I also found it better to put the wheel on two pieces of wood

Unusual for a bearing to suddenly start making grinding noises with no warning. Does it make the same noise with the calipers removed?

When the wheel is out u will tell if it is the bearing

As Tom says, I will start removing parts but spin the wheel also to see if it is something to do with brakes etc. A process of elimination.

Another tip is to bung the bearings in the freezer for a few hours before drifting them into the wheel. Warming the wheel would also help.

Well took the front end apart today and it is/was definitely the wheel bearing that was making the noise.

One side was starting to disintegrate, and some of the ball bearings had worn out. So as I had a set of bearings in my spares it was replaced quickly and easily.

Well worth doing for so little money. Just don't replace the one in the sprocket carrier cost me 50 quid

Front: 6005-2RS
Rear: 6006-2RS
