I know Steve (exjapsteve on the forum) has a TreK and uses if pretty much all year (albeit I dont think he commutes on it)

In general, I know some guys / bikes have some problems, I think it would be a true statement if I said the vast majority have had bugger all go wrong (well nothing that lead to the bike breaking down) - I will start a POLL on this to see if I am right or wrong.

As for the TNT or Trek - different looking bikes, TreK more geared to comfort and long miles (but you could do this on the TNT too, alas no top fairing/screen) tough decision - but its whatever floats your boat

Good luck fella - take the plunge, you aint ever gonna know until you have one and live with it for a year or so (by which time you will be hooked on Benelli's)
